Love Stones

The Love Stones tell a sad local legend. The Shangfang Temple once had about 100 monks and the Xiafang Temple had dozens of nuns. The two temples often exchanged needed goods. But the elder of the Shangfang Temple and the master of the Xiafang Temple had an agreement that the two sides would beat the gong when they had goods to exchange and that the monks and nuns of the two temples were not allowed to meet each other. If any humiliation was done to Buddhism, the Shangfang Temple would be inundated and the Xiafang Temple would be burnt. Contrary to their expectations, a young monk from the Shangfang Temple met a young nun from the Xiafang Temple in private. As the time went on, they pledged to marry each other. Soon afterwards, the Shangfang Temple was destroyed by a flood and the Xiafang Temple was burnt in a fire. Knowing they had made a serious mistake, the monk and the nun embraced each other, were burnt to death, and turned into two stones.
